“On ‘high/low culture’”,

I don’t think the distinction exists outside of classroom. My Seminar teacher explained high culture as “the opera” and low culture as “MrBeast” but the only real difference is the style of communication; both of them have the same goal of entertaining humans. The labels do more work to describe the type of people entertained by it rather than the art itself, but even then it’s a poor metric considering that everyday plebs go to the opera now (tickets to the Met Opera in NYC start at US$35 and can be had for less). It’s a way to academise something that doesn’t need to be academised and describes instead of inhabiting “culture”. ♦
